The Car swept everything - Audience's Choice, Jury's Choice and got Cynthia Lee her Audience's Favourite Performer award.
Theatre Idols started as a 10-minute play competition, and yesterday's finals involved the playwrights expanding their plays to a full 45 minutes. Now if you think about it, that's a real challenge. A 10-minute play cannot have complicated plotlines, however a 45-minute play needs a lot more to hold the audience's attention.
I think that is why The Car was the unanimous choice. It has one clear theme, yet enough diversified characters to keep the play interesting, and the dialogue was funny at the right moments. Also, by the luck of the draw, it was also the first play to be staged which ensured that it captured the full attention of the audience.
The second play was Smitten, though I think it should be renamed Obsessed. It was a courageous experimental effort and Dick Su portrayed the poor smitten guy well enough, but it is not a play. One of the judges Eleanor Wong said, "I think it can't decide if it wants to be a play." Well, spot on. It would work extremely well as a short story though, because it's full of beautiful one-liners and quotable quotes.
One particular quote that stuck in my mind:
"'Almost' is the saddest word in the English language."

Smitten
Well, how true.
And Sleep Walkers, easily the worst of the lot in my opinion. Daddy's princess has always had a good life, got married to a good man and is supposed to live happily ever after. However, she wants to know what's it's like not to be so fortunate. There has to be something more to life than mundane happiness, she thought. So she willed herself to sleepwalk to the park near her house where she offered sexual favours to strange men.
A storyline like that is just tired.
Lastly, Cynthia Lee's great in her performance in The Car. She switches personalities as easily as we flip the light switches in our homes. Her great efforts are almost enough to forgive her for her hosting effort in the WKRZ's morning show.
Almost, but not quite enough.

So the secrets of a long marriage are don't sleep on an argument, always share a kiss and hold hands before going to bed.
The other secret to wedded bliss is never letting arguments fester. Or, as 105-year-old Percy Arrowsmith put it more succinctly, the regular use of two words: "Yes, dear".
Guess all us young farts can learn from that huh?
